What causes hair to lose it’s natural pigmentation?
It’s not uncommon for your hair to change as you get older. Your hair follicles contain melanin to create the pigments, which combine with protein keratins, which in turn, give your hair its colour. But over time, hair follicles can lose pigment, resulting in white hair.
What causes prematurely greying hair?
White or Grey hair is more noticeable in people with a darker hair colour. Although white hair is characteristic of aging, colourless hair strands can appear at any age. Causes can be Genetics, Stress, or a medical condition where your body to produces less melanin. Smoking can also damage hair follicles due to toxins in cigarettes, causing early white hair.
Good nutrition can aid prevention; ensuring you have enough B12, with folic acid (B9), zinc, copper, selenium and iron decrease the chance of premature greying.
